What is Bluegrass Now?
IN THE BEGINNING
Bluegrass Now began publication in December 1990 with a stated commitment to provide fans and
bluegrass industry leaders with a publication whose content and graphic appearance would reflect
the high level of professionalism that was carrying our music to new levels of popularity.
FOCUS ON THE FUTURE
While BN reveres and pays homage to the patriarchs of bluegrass, our vision has always been to the
future, with special emphasis on such topics as the role played by women and youth in the commercial
success of bluegrass. Indeed, the first "slick" cover of BN carried the effigy of the talented and
youthful, Missy Raines.
PURSUIT OF VISUAL APPEAL
To achieve our goal of graphic excellence, comparable to any entertainment publication,
our first employee was Kate McHaney, a highly regarded Graphic Designer and Layout Artist,
who had award-winning experience with major university publications. After 18 years, Kate
continues to make BN "better looking" every month.
GREAT WRITERS TO TELL A GREAT STORY
Instead of soliciting freelance articles, BN opted to go with an international staff of experienced,
feature writers, who produce well-researched, up-to-date information on topics they have been assigned,
insuring that what you receive in each issue of the magazine is both informative and has literary merit.
While BN occasionally uses contributions by freelance writers, they must meet the high standards we've
established for your staff writers.
BREAKING THE EAST COAST MOLD
The literary mission of Bluegrass Now includes a commitment to "breadth" along
with "depth" in our coverage. To accomplish this end BN retains a full-time writer
covering bluegrass events West of the Rockies, and Corresponding Editors in Canada, Europe, Japan,
and other foreign countries. BN keeps its readers apprised of bluegrass developments internationally.
SINCE OUR INCEPTION IN 1990, WE HAVE REMAINED TRUE TO OUR "FUTURISTIC" MISSION OF:
- Maintaining ethnic, gender, racial and geographic equity with regard to Cover and Feature stories.
- Using professional staff writers to assure accuracy, timeliness, readability and literary excellence in each story.
- Using BN to assist young artists and fledgling entrepreneurs in nurturing their embryonic careers.
- BN is the only bluegrass publication with a Teenage Staff Writer, who nurtures our demographic future by encourages the involvement of youth at all levels in the bluegrass community.
- With an eye to the future, BN has always assisted in the organization and promotion of local and regional bluegrass associations.
